Our design for the new Wagenremise in Garkau repairs and reconciles the existing cluster of buildings, transforming the disconnected huddle into a long suite of buildings, a generous whole made from four parts, with over 70m the longest building on the farm. This infrastructure provides a calm background for Hugo Häring’s buildings and reinstates his original idea for the farm’s layout with a new building structure. It provides a meaningful storage space for various users, for double the amount of cars, recycling bins, an electric car charging station, bikes and plant. This will keep the rest of the farm clear to unfold new user scenarios, especially around its central space designed by Häring. Where possible our design for the new Remise integrates existing walls but largely makes a new whole, with roofs, walls, columns and cladding carefully reflecting Hugo Häring‘s principles and attitude, since no drawings exist. The design has been coordinated in close collaboration with the the heritage committee, to develop the farm forward into the future, e.g. with PV panels or cisterns to reuse rainwater for houses and gardens.
