We have been appointed to carry out repair works of Hugo Häring’s iconic cowshed in Garkau. Major parts of the building have been restored to ensure structural stability and to reinstate the external envelope with new roofing, windows and repair works of the timber cladding. Inside the building major restoration works of the concrete structure have been detailed in collaboration with the structural engineers to repair severe defects of cement and reinforcement, ultimately to ensure long-term integrity of the building but also to bring it back to Hugo Häring’s idea with a white-washed lime-painted interior. These works for saving the derelict building made a profound base to rethink its future with a concept for flexible and seasonal user-scenarios, developed jointly with fire consultants to mediate between heritage requirements and escape routes, aiming at programming both the cow-space on the Ground Floor but also the mostly unknown space of the large haystack above.
