We have designed and co-curated the exhibition for ‘Hamburg Plan 2050 – Schau Hamburg in die Karten’ with a large display which unfolds the ‘Stadt-Umland-Atlas’ with over 300 maps of Hamburg, researched and compiled by urbanista in three rooms, each of them with a specific diorama – one as an arena and open forum for exchange and debate, framed by two friezes of contemporary vedutes by photographer Philip Heckhausen held together by a vast map on the floor, one as a research room for in-depth studies and one as a Wunderkammer with a stacked hang of the maps. The different formats open up a scenery to allow a broad audience to engage with the exhibits, the public and experts, adults and children to reflect and experience the content of Hamburg’s data and scales.
In order to reuse existing spatial resources the exhibition has been installed within the exhibition rooms of the BallinStadt by installing a second layer of temporary scaffolding and a light curtain as a calm backdrop and room in a room. This structure also pops out in front of the building, turning its external space into a large signage that is visible from a distance. All components of our architecture will be recycled and reused in the following shows which will be framing and accompanying the process for developing the new ‘Räumliches Leitbild‘ for Hamburg 2050 over two years to support this process with a flexible toolkit.
