The design for ifa/Stuttgart and Arch+/Berlin provides a modular system of exhibition furniture to display a large archive of projects, case studies and research on collective resources and shared spaces that foster democratic participation. The exhibition design therefore acts an open and flexible system whose serial character supports the idea of an ‘Atlas’ and allows interaction at each of the exhibition venues with the potential to add further projects over the course of the worldwide tour. A simple group of light foldable timber frames, easy to adapt and move from one exhibition space to another, allows amendments and reconfigurations to make each display specific and unique. Similar to tents or market stalls the design in itself resembles something ‘common’, familiar typologies of movable furniture to unfold temporary spaces for reflection, social gatherings, discourse and exchange. A set of sturdy components with racks, trestles and stools has been translated into a discrete and light system for the rich displays of graphics, models, film projections and art. The design for the graphic elements has been jointly developed as an integral part of the exhibition system by Heimann + Schwantes. The coherence in form and typology links the varied elements in order to reinforce the Atlas as a whole and the relationships between its parts. The inaugural exhibition will take place at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien, followed by Pittsburgh and a tour across America.
